Motorcycle bomb intercepted in Maguindanao (10:31 a.m.)

SECURITY forces on Tuesday intercepted a motorcycle rigged with explosives that was supposed to be detonated by a group affiliated with the Southeast Asian regional terrorist network Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), a military spokesman reported.

Major Armand Rico, spokesman of the Armed Forces' Eastern Mindanao Command, said the motorcycle was intercepted by troops belonging to the Army's 64th Infantry Battalion in a checkpoint in Ampatuan town in Maguindanao.

Acting on intelligence information, Rico said the soldiers set up checkpoints in the town purposely to intercept a motorcycle bomb supposedly assembled in Mamasapano town, also in Maguindanao by a Davao-based terrorist cell under one Abdullah, who he said is affiliated with JI.

The JI, which has links with the local terrorist group Abu Sayyaf, has financed a number of bombings in the country, including the so-called Valentine's Day bombing in 2005 that left several people dead and scores injured. (VR/Sunnex)
