Arroyo: 'Tough choices' softened effects of crisis

MANILA (Updated 4:23 p.m.)-- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo attributed "tough choices" made by her administration to the softening of the effects of the global crisis on the Philippines.

In her eighth State-of-the-Nation Address before Congress today, she spoke of the global crisis affecting food and fuel prices. "Neither we nor anyone else in the world expected this day to come soon but we prepared for it," she said.

She added that her government has the funds needed to ease the burden on Filipinos. "We have the money to care for our people and pay for food when there are shortages, for fuel," she said. Through "foresight, grit and political will," the country was able to prepare for the crisis.

Earlier, Philippine bishops said they expected Arroyo to deliver on health bills and agrarian reform.

"I hope and pray that the Sona would have agrarian development as its focal issue. No dole-outs, all-out war, super regions and similar desperate and visionary agenda," said Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz. (Sunnex)
