Cop dies after boat capsizes (3:20 p.m.)

MANILA -- A policeman died while two mayors from Tawi-tawi province survived when the motorized banca they were riding capsized off Bonggao town, police reports said Tuesday.

A report sent by Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) police director Joel Goltiao identified the fatality as Senior Police Officer (SPO) 1 Sadjan Jal Palahuddin.

Rescued were Mayor Kuhyuh Pajiji of Sibutu town and Mayor Hadji Serbin Ahaja of Bonggao and two other security escorts, PO2 Espin Gulam at PO1 Zansibar Muallila.

According to reports reaching the Philippine National Police (PNP) national headquarters, the two mayors and their escorts were aboard a 40-horse power banca when it was hit by big waves at the village of Pahut in Bonggao town around 10 a.m. Monday, causing the banca to capsize.

Reports also said that three M16 rifles issued to the police were lost in the incident. (VR/Sunnex)
