Dureza: Teves not likely to do illegal things (11:04 a.m.)

MANILA -- Press Secretary Jesus Dureza is confident that Finance Secretary Margarito Teves would not engage in anything illegal, noting that his name is being dragged into the alleged P750-million swine scam because of his previous position at the Landbank of the Philippines.

Dureza said he has worked with Teves since they were both members of the House of Representatives and "knowing secretary Teves, he is person who will not get himself in any mess. He is the type who will not get into these illegal things."

He added that no evidence has been presented yet proving that he is involved in alleged irregularities.

He said Teves is being dragged into the controversy because he was the president of the Landbank at the time the allegations supposedly took place.

Senate Blue Ribbon committee chairman Senator Alan Peter Cayetano said his committee would look into the role of Teves in the P750 million alleged swine scam after the Landbank's board of directors approved the arranger's fee of P100 million and attorney's fee of P14 million. (JMR/Sunnex)
