Abu Sayyaf bandit with P2M bounty falls

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Government troops arrested a man believed to be an Abu Sayyaf member with a P2 million reward for his arrest, in Isabela, the capital of the nearby province of Basilan.

The arrest is part of the continuous manhunt operation by government on the remaining leaders and members of the Abu Sayyaf group who are out to sow terror, a military official said.

First Marine Brigade chief Colonel Rustico Guerrero identified the bandit with a P2 million reward for his arrest as Usman Asari Aldani.

Guerrero said Aldani was arrested Monday by marine troops while buying provision at the Isabela City public market.

Aldani, who was positively identified by two witnesses, is a known accomplice of Abu Sayyaf leaders Khadafy Janjalani and Isnilon Hapilon, according to Guerrero.

Janjalani was killed in September 4, 2006 in a clash with marine troops in the hinterlands of Sulu province, while Hapilon is one of the Abu Sayyaf leaders who remain at large.

Guerrero said Aldani's arrest was covered by a warrant for kidnapping with serious illegal detention.

He said the P2-million reward would be awarded to the informant, who will also be covered by the witness protection program of the government.

Guerrero said Aldani confesses during interrogation to the crime he is accused of and was turned over to the police for legal disposition. (Bong Garcia/Sunnex)
