DAVAO CITY -- Suspected members of the New People's Army (NPA) attacked a banana plantation in Maco, Compostela Valley where they burned a plane there used for aerial spraying.

About 15 rebels disarmed and took hostage two security guards of the MD Rio Vista Agri Ventures Inc. (MDRAVI) around 8 p.m. Friday, according to reports from the Army's 10th Infantry Division.

The guards were identified as Bormilito Concha and Manuel Sugse. They were posted at the plantation's chemical mixing building located at Barangay Pangi.

Concha and Sugse were allegedly hogtied by the rebels and brought to an unmanned guard post.

The NPA then burned a single-seater light plane owned by Mactan Corporation and contracted by MDRAVI for aerial spraying.

After about 20 minutes, the rebels released the guards. The raiders then withdrew towards Barangay Taglawig in Maco and Barangay Magdum in Tagum City.

They carted away one shotgun and a radio. Troops from the Army's 25th Infantry Battalion are still pursuing the rebels as of this writing Saturday.

Meanwhile, Army troops encountered anew NPA members in Toril, Davao City Friday afternoon.

The latest encounter happened in Sitio Katkat, Barangay Daliaon around 5 p.m.

The Army soldiers were conducting internal security operation in the area when they chanced upon undetermined number of rebels under the NPA's 54th Guerilla Front.

A firefight ensued after which the rebels withdrew towards undetermined directions. The government troops recovered three M16 rifles left by the rebels.

No soldier was wounded in the encounter while a rebel was killed and seven others were wounded. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
