90T workers land jobs in OSY program (11:37 a.m.)
MORE than 90,000 marginalized workers have been employed so far by the project “Out-of-School Youths Servicing Towards Economic Recovery” (Oyster) under the supervision of the Department of the Interior and
Local Government (DILG) since its inception in 2002.
The project is part of the initiatives of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in fulfilling her State of the Nation Address (Sona) commitment of easing poverty and creating more jobs.
In a report to DILG Secretary Ronaldo Puno, the Department’s Planning Service said that since the start of Oyster, 98,184 out-of-school youths (OSYs) have been employed under the project in various capacities through the barangays across the country. This is in step with Arroyo’s Sona goal of generating from six million to 10 million jobs and livelihood opportunities during her term.
To prepare OSYs for their responsibilities as employed workers, 13,042 training workshops have been conducted so far, benefitting 29,811 persons in the first quarter of 2008 alone, the report noted. (VR/Sunnex) |
