KIDAPAWAN CITY -- A fragmentation grenade exploded in an abandoned lot in Barangay Malapag in Carmen, North Cotabato, around 7:30 a.m. Monday, a police investigator said.

None of the villagers was hurt during the explosion.

According to SPO2 Teng Dimapalao of the Carmen Philippine National Police (PNP), two grenades were lobbed by still unidentified motorcycle-riding men, but only one went off.

The other explosive was recovered few meters away from the blast site, he added.

"This was just plain and simple harassment against the people here in Carmen," Dimapalao said.

Monday's explosion was the second since last week.

On August 13, three improvised explosive devices (IEDs) attached to three steel posts of Transco's Tower Number KK-110 in Barangay Tacupan were blasted off by suspected members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

Transco officials from South and Central Mindanao said the blast has caused power blackouts and affected the areas served by the Cotabato Light and Power Company (Colight) and the Maguindanao Electric Cooperative (Magelco), which cover provinces of Maguindanao, Shariff Kabungsuan, and North Cotabato.

"The explosion caused the tower to lean and the line conductors to hit the rubber trees below. It took sometime for our linemen to clear such vegetation, thus the power restoration was delayed," said Manuel Hamoy, department manager of Transco's southwest Mindanao based in General Santos City.

Another four IEDs were recovered the next day, August 14, by operatives of the Explosives and Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team led by Sergeant Elmor Forcado of the Army's 63rd EOD, Sergeant Samuel Suyamin of the Army's 61st EOD, and Sergeant Eduard Calungsad of K-9 unit. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
