Marine commandant Ben Dolorfino said the troops were on a non-combat mission when a group of Abu Sayyaf men waylaid them at 6:45 a.m. in Bonbon Village in Patikul town.
According to Dolorfino, the troops were on a "logistics run" when the ambush occurred.
It was not determined, however, if there were casualties on the side of the Abu Sayyaf bandits in the subsequent firefight, he added.
The military has been aiming for the past several years to end the Abu Sayyaf Group, which allegedly has linkages with the al-Qaeda network.
A number of Jemaah Islamiyah members are said to be with the Abu Sayyaf bandits in Sulu.
Latest military estimates indicated that the Abu Sayyaf Group has over 300 members, mostly in Sulu and in other bailiwick provinces in Basilan. (VR/Sunnex)For more Philippine news, visit Sun.Star General Santos. (August 31, 2008 issue) Write letter to the editor. Click here. |
