AFP remains cautious despite panel dissolution (10:26 a.m.)

MANILA -- The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Wednesday said it is keeping its vigilance in the wake of the government’s decision to dissolve the panel that is negotiating for a peace accord with the secessionist Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

However, AFP public affairs office chief Ernesto Torres said the military believes that the dissolution of the panel headed by retired general Rodolfo Garcia is not an abandonment of the peace process with the MILF.

“Expecting is not the proper term but we are prepared to address any eventuality. Troops are there on the ground. We are war-gaming any possible scenarios and we are prepared to address whatever threats that may come out from this developing situations,” said Torres.

Earlier Wednesday, Malacanang announced that it is disbanding the government panel citing the sincerity of the MILF in pursuing the talks brought about by their refusal to surrender two commanders who are responsible for recent atrocities in Central Mindanao.

Government troops actually launched an offensive against the group of the two renegade commanders since August 18. The continuing operations have so far resulted in the capture of a number of rebel camps, including Camp Bilal and Camp Vietnam. (VR/Sunnex)
