New Marina chief eyes new measures (10:30 a.m.)

MANILA -- Newly appointed Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) administrator Elena Bautista vowed to lead the agency to its new horizon by introducing new measures that would make it a full-fledged maritime administration.

Bautista replaced outgoing administration Vicente Suazo, who resigned from his post effective August 31.

The newly installed Marina head, on the other hand shrugged off the sentiments of other Marina employees questioning her appointment.

“It was their right”, she said, adding that she would push through with the reforms.

Bautista was appointed as officer-in–charge, meaning all her actions will need the approval of the Marina board, where she hold the position as vice-chairman.

The Marina board is headed by Secretary Leandro Mendoza of the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC).

The board members include the Marina Administrator, Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), Department of National Defense (DND), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Development Bank of the Philippines and 2 private organizations, while the Philippine Coastguard serves as an observer. (FP/Sunnex)
