DepEd told to connect with Asian neighbors (11:11 a.m.)

MANILA – President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ordered the Department of Education (DepEd) to link up with other Asian countries that are interested in English proficiency.

This, she said, will eventually create more job opportunities for Filipino English teachers.

Arroyo, citing the case of about 50 Korean teachers who recently completed their English training in the country under DepEd, said there could be other similar English-proficiency opportunities for local teachers who could generate extra income while still working within the Philippines.

"Their (Filipino teachers)’ expertise in teaching the English language to non-English speaking visitors will help them financially as well as establish the Philippines as a primary center of English in Asia," she said.

"The DepEd should look for more tie-ups with our Asian neighbors interested in learning English since we have the skills and the manpower. Our teachers don't even have to go abroad anymore if these opportunities are present here," she added. (JMR/Sunnex)
