Forced evacuation in Compostela Valley starts

DAVAO CITY -- Local officials in Compostela Valley have started forcing residents to leave areas in Maco town that are still threatened by landslides.

Chief Superintendent Andres Caro II, regional police chief and chair of the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council (RDCC) in Southern Mindanao, said the forced evacuation was still ongoing as of Thursday afternoon.

Caro refused to give an estimate of the number of residents affected, but he asked for the public's cooperation in providing assistance to 1,216 Masara residents who were forced to leave their houses after the landslides that hit the village over the weekend.

He said evacuation centers have been set up for affected residents.

At least 24 people were confirmed dead in landslides that hit Maco's village of Masara, according to a report released Thursday by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Southern Mindanao.

Malacañang on Wednesday gave the green light for the forced evacuation of residents in some areas in Maco, following the occurrence of killer landslides.

Meanwhile, various government agencies spearheaded by the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council (RDCC) are now embarking on a donation drive to help victims and displaced families.

Caro said construction materials, cooking utensils, food, and even clothing are some of the most needed materials of the evacuees.

"It is but humane to share our resources with the victims who need food, water, blankets, mosquito nets, used clothing, among others," Caro said in a statement issued Thursday.

He also appealed to establishments, private individuals, and stakeholders in the region to participate in the donation drive by sharing resources in cash or in kind.

Caro said that all donations should be coursed through the DSWD in Southern Mindanao, which spearheads the Food and Shelter Cluster. (CPM/Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
