FSGO: Mindanao conflict could lead to Martial Law (11:09 a.m.)

MANILA -- THE Former Senior Government Officials (FSGO), in a petition during a press conference on the possible onset on Charter Change, warned on Thursday that the armed conflict between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) could be a possible step for the President to declare Martial Law.

The group said they are committed to a “just and sustainable peace in Mindanao”, saying they will initiate “all possible action that will bring about an inclusive process to begin with a ceasefire and return to the peace table.”

“The inevitable armed confrontations and deaths that will follow could be a ready-made platform to suspend the writ of habeas corpus or heaven forbid, even the declaration of Martial Law,” the petition read.

The petition furthered explained that the Constitution only requires a vote of the majority of the Congress, voting jointly to approve and extend Martial Law.
