Mindanao war cuts Panay rehab fund by P5B

ILOILO CITY -- Due to huge expenses incurred in sustaining the government's war against Moro extremists in Mindanao, the P15 billion intended for Panay's rehabilitation would be slashed by P5 to P7 billion, said project proponent second district congressman Arthur Defensor.

Defensor, House majority floor leader, said the proposed P15 billion fund intended to rehabilitate Panay after the devastation wrought by Typhoon Frank will be trimmed down to P8 or P10 billion.

The fund is now under deliberation in Congress, added Defensor.

He also said that technical people are in Iloilo to validate the reports of various agencies on the damages incurred by the city.

Defensor said the technical committee would also choose infrastructure projects that need to be prioritized.

Among these projects are bridges, roads, and school buildings damaged by the typhoon.

Earlier, Presidential Assistant for Western Visayas Raul Banias said various government agencies like the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and Department of Health (DOH), among others, submitted a report on the damaged utilities in Iloilo that need immediate attention.

The Task Force Panay reviewed the reports and selected priority infrastructure.

Once the Senate and President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo approves the release of the fund, it will be channeled to respective government agencies like DPWH and DOH. (JDB/Sun.Star Iloilo/Sunnex)
