Amendment of medical act pushed (12:15 a.m.)
MANILA -- Akbayan Representative Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel made three recommendations Tuesday before the Committee on Human Rights in relation to the controversial canister operation at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City.
First, she stressed the need for greater regulation in the healthcare sector that will ensure "ethical standards are upheld and professionalism is truly exercised by doctors."
"This will include amending the Philippine Medical Act so that sanctions are imposed on erring doctors," said Baraquel.
She also recommended that access to information must be enhanced, citing the victim, only known as Jan-Jan, was refused access to his medical records.
Lastly, the militant lawmaker wants the environment of discrimination to be addressed. "One remedy that we are pushing for is immediate passage of the Anti-Discrimination bill to penalize discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity." (Sunnex) |
