Rains threaten Pampanga dike anew
ARAYAT -- Heavy rains brought about by tropical depression Pablo on Thursday inundated the Pampanga River and threatened the Gemasan portion of the Arnedo Dike in this Pampanga town.
The floodwaters flow from the provinces of Aurora and Nueva Ecija.

But this time, logs and cut boards drifting along with the floodwaters added to the damage at the already eroding portions of the dike.
Officials here believe the logs and boards came from an illegal logging site in Aurora.
Police officers led by Superintendent Bruno Viola immediately confiscated the logs along the riverbanks on the grounds that they "could probably be illegal."
Viola estimated the value of the seized logs and boards to run up to thousands of pesos.
Some residents in the area braved the strong water currents to get some of the logs and boards. Some used the logs while others sold them as firewood.
Residents in the threatened area raised fear that the dike may gave way to the rising waters and cause massive flooding in the villages.
Chairman Leonardo Salac of Barangay Cupang appealed to Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) officials for the immediate reinforcement of the dike to prevent the probable loss of lives and properties.
Third District Representative Dong Gonzales Jr., who earlier met with DPWH officials led by Engineer Alfredo Tolentino, assured residents that the threatened portions of the dike will immediately be inspected and repaired. (Jovi T. De Leon/Sun.Star Pampanga/Sunnex)
