Senate orders arrest of dela Paz, wife (10:20 a.m.)

MANILA -- Retired Philippine National Police (PNP) comptroller Eliseo de la Paz failed to appear in the Senate probe on the Moscow mess Thursday.

Senator Miriam Santiago, chair of the Foreign Relations Committee, then directed Senate sergeant-at-arms Jose Balajadia to arrest de la Paz and his wife.

The two were held briefly at the Moscow International Airport after Russian customs officials yielded from them a huge amount of money as he was on his way back to Manila.

Dela Paz returned to the Philippines last Tuesday. He issued an apology and claimed responsibility for the "international embarrassment."

Santiago meanwhile also quashed the motion filed by the counsel of dela Paz to have the Senate probe on the PNP contingency fund nullified. (Sunnex)
