Abu Sayyaf leader with P2-M bounty falls

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The Joint Task Force Comet (JTFC) arrested a mid-level leader of the Abu Sayyaf with a P2 million bounty in the island province of Sulu, a military official said Wednesday.

Major Eugenio Batara Jr., information officer of the Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom), said the suspect was arrested around 9:45 a.m. Wednesday by the JTFC troops near a bank in downtown Jolo, the capital of Sulu.

Batara identified the arrested suspect as Sakirin Andalan Sali alias Abu Kiri. He was positively identified by a former Abu Sayyaf member who is now working for the JTFC.

Batara said Sali is under the group of the late Abu Sayyaf leader Ghalib Andang alias Commander Robot, who was killed during the Bicutan siege.

He said the suspect has a standing warrant of arrest for multiple murder with frustrated murder docketed under criminal case number 473-3.

“The apprehension was successfully conducted with the joint effort of all the units under JTFC, with all units providing information by monitoring the movement of the suspect,” Batara said.

The suspect did not resist when apprehended by the troops that swooped down the area where Abu Kiri was sighted.

Lieutenant General Nelson Allaga, chief of the Westmincom, has conveyed his commendation to the troops responsible for the apprehension of the Abu Sayyaf mid-level leader.

Allaga said the arrest is a positive development in the campaign against the Abu Sayyaf bandits who are now low on both logistical and financial support.

He called for the cooperation of concerned civilians to help in the military’s campaign to finally finish the remaining Abu Sayyaf bandits in the region. (Bong Garcia/Sunnex)
