Cammayo has war ‘wounds’: military

DAVAO CITY -- The medical examination conducted on First Lieutenant Vicente Cammayo showed his eardrum was damaged apparently due to the November 7 firefight with the communist rebels in Barangay Casoon, Monkayo.

Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) spokesman Major Randolph Cabangbang said Cammayo's men saw him bleeding during the firefight, thus they believed he sustained gunshot wounds.

However, Cabangbang said Cammayo is still considered wounded due to the injury on his eardrum which he sustained in the course of the battle.

"Nabasag siguro yung eardrum nya nang muntikan na siyang tamaan ng granada (His eardrum probably burst when a grenade almost hit him)," Cabangbang said.

The medical examination result also showed that Cammayo is suffering from diarrhea. His feet also bore several wounds, indicating that his military boots were taken off.

"Baka pinalakad lang siya ng nakapaa at para magkasugat-sugat yung paa niya at ng mahirapan siyang makatakas (Maybe he was forced to walk barefoot, for him to get those wounds on his feet and that made it difficult for him to escape)," Cabangbang surmised.

Marks on the soldier's feet also indicated that Cammayo's feet were tied.

The military earlier claimed that Cammayo was wounded during the fight.

His rebel captors released him in Loreto, Agusan del Sur on January 6, this year, exactly two months after he was captured.

He was first turned over to the officials of the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC), who also handed Cammayo over to Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Vice Mayor Sara Duterte.

Cammayo was flown by the Dutertes to the Naval Force headquarters in Panacan and was turned over to the military. (BOT/Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
