Tension expected Friday in council session
By Albert B. Lacanlale

MEXICO, PAMPANGA -- Tension is expected to rise at the Municipal Council session hall as the "newly elected president" of the Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) of this town will try to attend the council's regular session Friday.

Barangay Sta. Maria chairman Mar Reyes, who was recently chosen "to replace" embattled ABC President Teddy Tumang, will reportedly attend the Council session as representative of the "Liga ng mga Barangay."

However, Tumang, who earlier said that he would not attend Friday's Council session to prevent any unpleasant confrontation, was reported to have announced that he would attend the said session.

Last Tuesday, Tumang said he is confident that the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the national ABC leaders would uphold his incumbency.

The rest of the barangay officials, on the other hand, told SSP that they would accompany Reyes to the session hall and ask the Municipal Council to recognize him as their new representative.

Punzalan, for his part, said he would also go with the village chieftains in backing Reyes' attendance to the council session.

In an interview, Punzalan said he is supporting the ABC member's call for reorganization since the present leadership allegedly "failed to perform well in his obligations."

These reports add up to the already tense atmosphere hovering the legislative session Friday.

Last Friday, majority of village chieftains here "elected" Reyes as ABC president amidst their on-going clamor for Tumang's resignation as the league's top official.

The election of Reyes, however, sparked suspicion that the ABC members violated pertinent laws particularly the Local Government Code of 1991.

But the barangay chairmen maintained that their clamor for reorganization is already a strong ground for the reelection of a new leader that would "steer the league to a progressive organization."
