Lapid stays with Lakas
By Chris Navarro and Ria Isidro-de Fiesta

PROVINCIAL Lakas-CMD chairman Gov. Lito Lapid will not bolt the administration party despite the presidential bid of his "ninong" Fernando Poe Jr.

Lapid said despite his closeness to his mentor and fellow movie actor, he has no plans of shifting political parties.

Lapid said with Pampanga being President Arroyo's bailiwick, other presidential aspirants "will be trailing the President in terms of the number of votes in the province."

The governor said other aspirants for presidential are claiming that they would "beat" Arroyo in her home province.

The aspirants, according to the governor, are "too confident," sighting the fact that Arroyo leads by as much as 52 percent in the recent SWS survey conducted among the presidential contenders, which include Sen. Panfilo Lacson, Poe and former Education Sec. Raul Roco.

Meanwhile, a Lapid supporter, who requested anonymity, said Tuesday "it is inconceivable that the governor will not support 'Da King' (referring to FPJ) because it was Fernando Poe Sr. who was responsible in making Lapid into the movie star that he is today."

The source also said even after the death of the elder Poe, his son, Ronnie, continued supporting Lapid at a time when the stuntman from Pampanga was just beginning to make a name in the movies.

Lapid, it was learned, "doubled" for Fernando Poe Sr. in most of the latter's death-defying performances.

Lapid said he owes a debt of gratitude to Poe Jr. even as he referred to the Philippine movie icon as "the manager."

The same source said that it is inevitable for Lapid not to back Fernando Poe Jr. and that, Pampanga, most likely, "will go for FPJ."

"Lapid has not lost his magic as a leader of the Kapampangan. Where Lito goes, so goes his Kabalen," the source said.
