City SK prexy quits; cries 'harassment' By Dante M. Fabian
ANGELES -- The president of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) federation in this city recently resigned after he was allegedly harassed and accused of irregularities in the use of SK funds.
Councilor Bryant Gonzales, Angeles City SK federation president, announced before the City Council last Tuesday that he already filed his resignation with Ariel Joseph Arcillas, SK national federation president, last Nov. 7.
Gonzales said some groups have been spreading wrong information against him among SK officials in the city.
The elected vice president, Randy Mallari, SK president of Barangay Salapungan, assumed the position left vacant by Gonzales Friday afternoon.
Mayor Carmelo Lazatin installed Mallari in a simple oath-taking ceremony in his office Friday.
Sources said for the past several weeks, Gonzales has been the subject of an ouster move by fellow barangay SK presidents for "loss of confidence" due to alleged unsatisfactory performance and alleged misuse of funds.
"Certain issues which I had previously attended to and satisfactorily answered are being raised again against my person. Needless to say, these have affected me, rather emotionally. I did try to put up a posture of firmness but the pressures proved too strong to ignore. I would have wanted to put up a fight to protect my valued reputation. Nonetheless, the better judgment in me dictates that to do so shall be unproductive as it will only create divisions and factions in my federation," Gonzales said in his letter to Arcilla.
However, Gonzales assured the national SK Federation he prays for the good health of all his colleagues and constituents.
He expressed hope for the success of good governance while assuring also that he shall always be available to serve the youth sector.
"In the meantime, I shall temporarily fade away from the scene hoping that such a move on my part will help defuse the tensions building up among some SK chairs. Thus, and with my deepest regrets, I am constrained to resign from my position as president of the Angeles City SK Federation," Gonzales added.
He said pressure for his resignation mounted as he and other federation presidents in the area were preparing for the Central Luzon SK Congress in Clark Special Economic Zone (CSEZ) in January 2004.
