MAGALANG -- A former councilor, who also ran for chairman in Barangay Sta. Cruz here, was shot to death Sunday afternoon by armed men as his son stood watch, police reports said.

Police identified the fatality as Danilo Canlas, 43, a resident of the barangay. He was with two others when the incident occurred near his house.

Investigation disclosed that the victim's son, who was not identified, warned his father that he saw suspicious-looking men behind him as he was playing cards with his friends.

Sensing danger, he ran away. That was when the killer shot his father, he said.

He further recounted that the killers fled towards an unknown direction on board a motorcycle.

Canlas was immediately taken to the Balitucan District Hospital by friends and neighbors. However, he was pronounced dead on arrival by attending physicians.

It was learned that Canlas sustained 11 gunshot wounds from a .9mm pistol in different parts of his body.

Concerned neighbors then notified the police. Police recovered 11 empty shells and two slugs from the scene.

Meanhwile, Mayor Pastor Guiao said he already directed his chief of police to investigate the incident.

"We have received reports that the incident may have stemmed from revenge, as the victim was also allegedly involved in a shooting incident earlier," Guiao said.

This incident, Guiao said, is only an isolated case as the town is known to be peaceful.

Chief Insp. Jun Capili, this town's police chief, said they already have a suspect but refused to reveal his identity so as not to hamper the investigations.

"It appears that the victim and the suspect had a rift in the past. But we're still looking into that angle," Capili said.
