Max’s: Best chicken, best service By Ria Isidro-de Fiesta
FOND memories and belief in the product were what made Mrs. Tess Laus decide to handle one of the most popular food chains in the country - Max’s Fried Chicken.
“Max’s has always given me fond memories. My husband (Levy Laus) and I always got together at Max’s Scout Tuazon. It was also where I first met my in-laws,” she said.
She first established Max’s Dau on March 19, 1999 with a firm belief in “hands-on” management. Mrs. Laus has made it a point to always be present in the store, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., to have “the feel” of the whole operation.
Looking back, Mrs. Laus said the opening of the Dau branch almost five years ago was virtually a “success,” with the place jam-packed with customers wanting to taste Max’s popular chicken.
“The whole place was what you would call ‘SRO’ (standing room only),” Mrs. Laus said.
Since then, Mrs. Laus said Max’s Dau has been a popular location for various functions, whether weddings, baptisms and such occasions.
Max’s Dau, she said, was also featured in one of the country’s top broadsheets as having one of the cleanest comfort rooms north of Luzon, Mrs. Laus said.
Next to be opened was Max’s Cabanatuan (May 4, 2000), which has been awarded, under Mrs. Laus’s care, as being The Most Improved Max’s Branch in the country.
Barely four months later, Max’s San Fernando was opened to the public.
Recognizing potentials
The San Fernando branch, before Mrs. Laus took over operations, was company-owned. Hardly hit by lahar and virtually submerged in mudflow, everyone thought they have seen the last of the place, located in Villa del Sol here.
But Mrs. Laus recognized its potential - with its accessibility and expansive parking space - and decided to rehabilitate the place.
It was opened September 29, 2000, and since then has been one of the city’s most popular and thriving restaurants.
Max’s SM came not two months after the San Fernando branch was opened, on November 11, 2000. Because of the thousands who welcomed the opening of the SM City Pampanga, the Max’s branch here received the Highest Dining Sales Award.
Next to open was Max’s Robinsons Starmills, on Dec. 10, 2001, which has also been doing well business-wise, Mrs. Laus said, with sales almost equal to that of SM Max’s.
Other awards and recognitions received by various Max’s branches under Mrs. Laus’s care include the Highest Single Day Sale for Max’s Dau; Customer Satisfaction Award for also for Max’s Dau; Most Improved Branch for Max’s Cabanatuan; and excellence awards..
Best chicken
With over 130 employees for the five branches and 30 on-call employees, Mrs. Laus said that all her Max’s branches make it a point to maintain the quality of their chicken.
We have received commendations from customers that we have the best chicken in town,” Mrs. Laus said.
They are also very particular with maintaining the health of their customers, and pride themselves with serving distilled water and distilled ice.
Max’s has always been “the place to be,” Mrs. Laus said, as their branches are not only accessible, but have clean and air-conditioned comfort rooms.
“Here in San Fernando, you can find familiar and popular faces. High government officials also dine her and hold major functions here, political ones or otherwise,” Mrs. Laus said.
This lady entrepreneur also bared plans of plans of expanding to accommodate “Max’s Express,” which is Max’s take-out fast food outlet.
“We have plans of putting up a Max’s Express in the city soon, but we are still studying the possibility,” Mrs. Laus said.
Choosing the product
Franchising, according to Mrs. Laus, is good, so long as you know the quality of the product you would want to endorse is high.
“Choose your product first before venturing into anything. What made me choose Max’s is its quality. It’s been here for 57 years,” Mrs. Laus said.
“It also pays to have the right people and getting support from your family and friends. Also a plus is cleanliness and well-trained staff,” she added.
“I believe in always giving efficient service with a smile. In the end, all your efforts will be worth it,” Mrs. Laus said.
