Editorial: Getting ready

FIRST District Rep. Francis "Blueboy" Nepomuceno is hopeful that the canvassing of votes for the presidential and vice presidential positions will come to a close Monday.

"The country will have its President before June 30," Blueboy was quoted to have said. And there is no doubt in his mind who the proclaimed winners will be.

No doubt, Blueboy has in mind President Gloria Arroyo and her runningmate, Kabayan Noli de Castro as the winners, as both are leading by a wide margin against their rivals, Fernando Poe Jr. and Loren Legarda, respectively.

Blueboy is also positive that a constitutional crisis will be averted so long as a winner is proclaimed before the June 30 deadline.

With only some 15 certificates of canvass to go, it's just a matter of time before the confirmation, and before the whole country knows its president and vice president.

What worries the Filipino nation at this point is the impending "people power" to be staged by supporters of Poe, who would not just take the matter - Arroyo's proclamation as president - sitting down.

There are talks that there will be mass protests nationwide if Poe is not proclaimed president.

A Constitutional crisis would indeed be averted when a president is finally proclaimed any time now. But what about the impending upheaval the nation would probably bear witness after the canvassing? Is the country ready for such an upset in the country's peace and order?

Is the country ready for another people power? Is the government ready to face another "struggle" with the masses? Are the Filipino people ready to bear witness to this uproar?

This early, word is a-buzzing that Poe's supporters are getting ready for the big battle.

Let's just hope the country is ready.
