Rey not picking fight with quarry inquiry call By Albert B. Lacanlale
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Third District Rep. Rey B. Aquino clarified Wednesday that he is not picking a fight with anybody with his recent call for Congress to look into the quarry industry.
Aquino made the statement during a meeting with local columnists here following his call for committees in Congress to look into the revenue generating potential of the quarry industry in the province.
Aquino clarified that he only wants the income from quarry to produce "concrete" development projects in the province, even amid the current financial difficulties of the government.
He said he does not question the authorities handling the sand industry but merely seeks the possibility of more people benefiting from the taxes collected from sand hauled out from the province.
In a proposed resolution to Congress, Aquino cited the possible development projects that could be undertaken using the money from the quarry business.
Among the infrastructures that Aquino eyes to be constructed are road networks and medical and education facilities.
"Since the government could not finance the construction of more school buildings and roads due to limited budget," Aquino said in recent interviews, "it could take advantage of the potential of quarry to generate enough funds to undertake such development works."
