Editorial: Hurrah for Arroyo; Staying put

PROVINCIAL officials here are one in their view that President Arroyo should be lauded for her commitment to fully operationalize the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport.

The laying of the capsule last Tuesday at the DMIA, they said, signals the start of DMIA's development.

We are sure many also heaved a sigh of relief, now that the vision to make the DMIA as the premier international airport in the country seems to be underway.

Who would not be glad of this recent development? Making Clark as the best hub in South East Asia - and Subic as well - will bring to the province the needed development in terms of investment and progress, as this will spur economic growth and bring in business and job opportunities in the province and in Central Luzon. This will also boost tourism in the province, they said.

What more, DMIA as a world-class airport can compete with other international airports in South East Asia.

Everyone's hoping that the DMIA development is finally in full swing. After all, good news is what we need in the midst of the country's financial crisis.

Staying put

He's staying put, after all.

Clark Development Corp. president Emmanuel Y. Angeles, according to President Arroyo, can stay at CDC - as long as he wants to stay. She made this statement after newsmen asked her on the status of the CDC, to which she added, "That's up to him (Angeles)."

Angeles's retention, we heard, was welcomed by political and business groups in the province, as this would entail the continuity of CDC's projects that have been made since 2001.

Apart from this is that Angeles's plans for the DMIA as an Aerotropolis or airport center is exactly what the President wants for Clark, according to Mabalacat Mayor Marino "Boking" Morales.

Morales also said Angeles's expertise in fiscal management also resulted in the financial stability of CDC, as the state-owned corporation continues to increase its income annually.

Meanwhile, Angeles said he is "going to serve for as long as (President Arroyo) wants me (in CDC)."

"My commitment I gave is the same commitment I gave her when she offered me that the position in March 2001," he said, adding that his retention in the public office is "his opportunity to serve the country, especially in these trying times."
