Editorial: Again?

JUST when everyone thought that the issue on the alleged waste dumping of pig farms in the province and nearby areas is under control, residents of Candaba have complained anew of fish kill and environment degradation in their area.

The complaints stemmed from the tons of carp fish, which surfaced Wednesday at the Malisik creek in Candaba, reportedly due to the illegal dumping of waste by pig farms in Bulacan province.

The volume of dead fish seen from the Kural na Bato creek in Barangay Salangan in San Miguel, Bulacan which leads to the Malisik creek, has already reached an alarming proportion, it was learned.

It has also been noted that the Kural na Bato creek somehow serves as the "gateway" of certain pig farms' basins in San Miguel town.

Apart from the fish kill, residents are also complaining of the effects of the repugnant odor and grayish color if the water in the creeks.

Candaba folk, who mainly earn a living through fishing, have lamented that they have not been able to catch fresh fish. In fact, they make do of the dead fish for food, which is actually dangerous to the health of the townspeople.

What's more, the Malisik creek here serves as a dam, which irrigates the almost 18,000 hectares of farmlands in the area.

With this, residents are asking the owners of pig farms to be "fair and square" while running their businesses, and that they must see to it that nobody gets affected negatively as they gain from their businesses.

Again, the complainants reiterated their appeal to the Environmental Management Bureau to conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the fish kill and make the appropriate action to address the problem.

We also reiterate our stand that there should be something done about the reported fish kill, because to our minds, it would be unfair if one party is negatively affected by a certain activity while one gains from it.

We would not want our kababayans, especially children, to die from the various illnesses brought about by the waste in the creek. Also, we would not want people to die from hunger, do we?
