Blaze in Balibago 'welcomes' Fire Safety Month By Dante M. Fabian
ANGELES CITY -- Minutes after the end of the Fire Safety Month motorcade organized by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) here, firemen rushed to fight a fire engulfing a house in Balibago Tuesday morning.
The observance of the Fire Safety Month was officially adopted when former President Ferdinand E. Marcos issued Proclamation 115-A declaring March as Fire Safety Month On Nov. 17, 1976.
The declaration of the ousted president evolved into what is presently observed as the Fire Prevention Month.
Fire Chief Inspector Nelson Feliciano, BFP Angeles City marshal, reported that the fire razed a semi-concrete residential unit occupied by the family of Christine Ricardo, 25, married, along Rina St., Mountain View Subdivision, Balibago in this city.
Feliciano said initial investigations showed that the fire grew accidentally into an uncontrollable blaze after being set off playfully with a cigarette lighter by the young children of the Ricardos.
He said the children - aged nine, five, and three - were left without any adult to watch over them inside the house owned by Mary Ann Paglia.
Feliciano added that the tots found a cigarette lighter and playfully burned pieces of paper that crept onto the walls and other objects in the surrounding walls.
He added that the fire reportedly started at 9:40 a.m. and responding firemen placed it under control 20 minutes later at 10 a.m.
Feliciano related that his office received a report of the fire at 9:45 a.m. exactly as the fire safety month motorcade ended at the City Hall complex in Pulung Maragul.
Feliciano disclosed that the motorcade was in line with the fire safety month activities implemented by the BFP officials, which includ fire drills, fire consciousness and safety lectures, sports activities, fire equipment demo, among others.
Feliciano added that the activities during the month of March are in accordance with the theme "Pambansang Kaalaman at Kamalayan sa Sunog, Tungo sa Kaligtasan at Kaunlaran ng Bayan."
Feliciano also expressed thanks to the civilian groups who pledged their support to the BFP's fire prevention month campaigns.
He said the motorcade yesterday was joined by members of non-government organizations such as the Jet Riders Associaition, Spectrum Radio Communications Group and the Primovers.
