Jailed Japanese gets help
By Rhay G. Navales

MABALACAT -- The Japanese Embassy in Manila is set to rescue its national who was detained at the Mabalacat Police Station after being suspected of stealing items from a grocery store.

This was learned Tuesday from Kito Shigeki, a member of the Rotary Club of Mabalacat who is assisting Hideji Yamano, 46, single, to get out of jail.

According to Shigeki, he had coordinated Yamano's case with the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Mofa) and the Japanese Embassy in Manila.

"I got an e-mail reply from the local government of Daito City in Osaka, Japan on Monday that they had already coordinated with the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Mofa) for the case of Mr. Hideji Yamano," Shigeki said.

The Japanese Mofa, he added, would take care of Yamano through the Japan Embassy in Manila, including the compensation of stolen grocery items.

Sun.Star Pampanga reported on Friday that Yamano was apprehended by the town police after being suspected of shoplifting at a grocery store in Barangay Dau in this town.

Yamano was reportedly caught stealing grocery items - packs of roast beef and Canadian bacon, a piece of banana cake and five pieces of cheese worth P321 - at Puregold Price Club-Dau Inc. here.

Police said the management of the establishment is demanding Yamano P3,210 - ten times the amount of the stolen items.

PO1 Wilma Concepcion, a police officer here, said Yamano admitted to investigators that he tried to steal the packs of food because of starvation.

The foreigner revealed that he no longer has any money to buy food for himself.
Yamano disclosed that his P3-million buy and sell business has gone bankrupt. He used to ship surplus vans and cars from Japan and sell them to Filipino buyers but his business plummeted.

The town police filed a theft case against Yamano before the Provincial Prosecutor's Office in the City of San Fernando under Information Sheet No. 05-B-553.

A bail of P10,000 was set for Yamano, who is still detained at this town's police station.
