SM, Clark lauded for supporting youth sports program
TWENTY-SEVEN barangays in Angeles City participated in the successful sports program sponsored by Mayor Carmelo "Tarzan" Lazatin and the Office of Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) held recently at the newly developed Bayanihan Park in the city.
Councilor Randy Mallari, SK Federation chairman in Angeles City, said the success of the Angeles City Inter-Barangay Basketball Tournament was due to the full support extended by SM Prime Holdings, Inc. and the Clark Development Corporation (CDC) to the SK's sports development program.
The newly rehabilitated park is being co-managed by the CDC and the SM for the continued maintenance of the park in front of the Clark Special Economic Zone's main gate.
Mallari said the event was held from April 16 to May 12. Of the 33 barangays, 27 teams joined the annual sports program of the city, he said.
With the free use of the park's basketball courts and lighting system, Mallari said the SK was able to save funds that will be used for other projects of the youth group in the community.
The Inter-Barangay tournament is part of Lazatin's youth and sport development programs, which aims to encourage the youth to be more active in the field of sports.
Rosever Pascua, youth and sports development officer, said the mayor has decided to organize the competition to promote grassroots development in the field of basketball. He added that the event was also organized in order to prevent the youth from taking illegal drugs.
Barangay Malabanias won the championship followed by Barangay Pampang as 1st runner up, Barangay Ninoy Aquino as 2nd runner-up, and Barangay Sta Teresita as 3rd runner-up. The Best in Team Discipline award went to Barangay Ninoy Aquino while the Best Coach award was given to Ricky L. Pinlac of Barangay Malabanias.
