UP stays in Clark
By Dante M. Fabian

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The University of the Philippines (UP), the country’s premier state university, will soon have its own permanent location in the Clark Special Economic Zone (CSEZ).

The location is seen to house the UP Clark known as UP-Pampanga Extension Program (UP-PEP), which is located in a temporary campus in the Clark ecozone.

In a Provincial Board (PB) committee hearing last Monday, the board members announced that Clark Development Corporation (CDC) officials have agreed to allocate 20 hectares for the UP campus.

Board Members Tars D.C. Halili said the CDC officials are willing to provide the campus site but they require the submission of a complete developmental plan, with all the support activities that are needed.

Halili said the CDC requires the developmental plan to determine what the UP campus would need, including its operational budget and where these will be sourced.

“In fact, they (CDC officials) have offered to allocate 20 hectares for the project and it will be a legacy for the present administration also for UP Clark as a permanent institution in Region 3,” Halili said.

“Everybody is very supportive of the project but UP officials should do their homework and conduct a summit. The CDC will just be waiting for the development plan that will be submitted by UP officials,” he said.

Bacolor Councilor Nilo “Pogi” Caballa, Pampanga Councilors League (PCL) president, has proposed a resolution before the Municipal Council of Bacolor seeking for a permanent campus site for UP in the Clark Air Base.

Juliet Mallari, UP Clark Extension Program director, expressed gratitude for the assistance given by the CDC as she said UP and CDC officials are now in constant communication to expedite the final approval of the site.

Mallari also lauded Caballa for his sincere efforts to advance the permanency of the UP system in the Clark Ecozone.

Leaders of the UP student council have also acknowledged Caballa’s initiatives.

“We will also be vigilant to ensure that the CDC will carry out its commitment, 25 years of being an extension is enough to say that the people of Pampanga need UP,” the student leaders said.
