Public works office repairs 'accident-prone' road

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Central Luzon said Thursday it has refurbished a slippery portion of the Olongapo-Gapan Road in Bacolor town where a Bataan Transit bus fell Wednesday night, injuring 52 passengers.

The bus, a police report said, plunged 15 feet from the Gugu Bridge into a rice field in the area.

Rico Guillas of the Provincial Engineer's Office (PEO) said China Water Construction, not their office, constructed the road. China Water also handled the Pampanga Delta Project.

Earlier, 52 passengers of the Bataan Transit line were injured after the bus skidded on a slippery portion of the Gugu Bridge in the town.

Residents, who witnessed the accident, said the location is a particular accident-prone portion of the west-bound lane of the Olongapo-Gapan Road because the road turns very slippery especially during rainy season.

The victim who reportedly with the most serious injuries was a policewoman named Carmen Gomez of the Hermosa police in Bataan.

Police said Gomez sustained lacerations and contusions.

The ill-fated bus toppled two lampposts and rammed past roadside concrete restraints before it rolled down and rested flat on its roof on the rice paddies beside the Olongapo Gapan Highway.

The rescuers, including Pampanga Board Member Eduardo "Wardy" Chu Jr., rushed the injured passengers to the Disodado Macapagal District Hospital in Sta. Rita town and Jose B. Lingad Memorial General Hospital (JBLMGH) in the City of San Fernando.

Chief Insp. Wilson Santos, chief of the Bacolor police, deployed policemen to the area to assist in the rescue efforts and in securing the belongings of the passengers.

Santos said the previous accidents were caused by water and oily spots combined with possible defects in the paving or design of the particular stretch of the road. (MHD)
