World Allergy Day July 8
By Albert B. Lacanlale

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- The Philippine Society of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (PSSAI) has announced its participation and support to the World Allergy Day at the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Medical Center (OLMCMC) Friday.

Initiated by the World Allergy Organizations (WAO) and World Health Organization (WHO), the World Allergy Day 2005 focuses on the prevention of allergies and allergic asthma.

The observance of the World Allergy Day aims to increase awareness of allergies among the physicians and patients.

The WAO survey of 30 countries revealed that of the 1.2 billion people, 22 percent or some 250 million of them suffer from an allergic disease.

In the Philippines, 32.5 percent of children aged 13 to 14 years old suffer allergic rhinitis - swelling of nasal mucous membranes - while 17.6 percent suffer from allergic asthma.

It will be reviewed in the World Allergy Day 2005 current knowledge about prevention of sensitization in susceptible individuals. Participants in the World Allergy Day 2005 will also be provided guidelines on how to prevent symptoms in people who are already sensitized to allergens.

For further information, access World Allergy Day materials on the WAO website: www.worldallergy.org/wad2005 or contact Dr. Gina Ponio at (045)961-2440 or Dr. Beatrice Vicente at (045)888-2666 loc. 202.
