Yusi to jueteng whistleblower: Shut up and help out
ANGELES CITY -- Central Luzon's top business leader has reiterated his call for Archbishop Oscar Cruz of Dagupan and Senator Panfilo Lacson to refrain from activities that would further destabilize the country.
Romy P. Yusi Sr., the regional governor for the Central Luzon of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc., said Cruz should stop intervening in the government and instead look for ways and to provide alternative livelihood for thousands of displaced jueteng employees.
Yusi said in a statement that Cruz's crusade against jueteng has displaced several thousands of people.
Cruz and other Church leaders have yet to launch alternative livelihood projects for jueteng personnel to prevent them from engaging in illegal activities, like drugs trafficking, Yusi said.
"Church leaders' intervention in the affairs of the state has been causing economic and political problems and discouraging foreign and local investors to come into the country," he said.
Yusi echoed proposals by other business and civic leaders in Central Luzon that the Church pay taxes since this will benefit the poor.
He said revenues from the Church could be used for the establishment of small business and other income-generating activities.
Yusi called on Lacson to stop fomenting dissension in the government.
He said Lacson could help clarify the controversial conversation between President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and an election official by explaining his role in the scandal.
Earlier reports said bugging equipment were purchased by the military during Lacson's time when he was chief of the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Task Force (Paoctf) under President Joseph Estrada.
Lacson had control of the sophisticated equipment and the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (Isafp) personnel who were trained to operate them.
"These bugging devices could have been used to produce the wiretapped tapes," Yusi said.
