Kapampangan Christmas carol competition set

ANGELES CITY -- The Center for Kapampangan Studies has launched a contest aimed at producing original Kapampangan Christmas carols.

Titled "Ligligan Kantang Pasku," the contest is open to all professional and amateur composers living here and abroad, and will accept entries in any musical genre (pop, folk, rock, religious, rap, basulto, etc.) as long as they carry a Christmas theme.

According to Robby Tantingco, director of the Center, Kapampangans have a rich musical tradition but strangely, not a single Kapampangan carol has been composed and handed down from the past.

"We have folk songs for planting and harvesting, serenades and lullabies, protest songs and songs in honor of saints," Tantingco said. "But not even one song for Christmas. Modern songwriters have recorded two or three carols, but that's about it. It's quite strange because Kapampangans have the most colorful Christmas festivals and practices."

The Center is offering P10,000 plus trophy for the top prize, and P5,000 and P3,000 for second and third, respectively.

The contest rules state that contestants may submit as many entries as they can, individually, in partnership with poets/lyricists, or as a group.

The song entry must have original music and purely or predominantly Kapampangan lyrics.

Kapampangan carols already commercially released, as well as translations of English or Tagalog carols, are disqualified.

Criteria for judging include the ability of the song's melody to evoke the spirit of Christmas (50 percent), poetry (rhyme, rhythm, imagery) of the lyrics and the theme of Christmas contained in the lyrics (30 percent), and correctness of usage of the Kapampangan language (20 percent).

Entries must contain the handwritten, typewritten or computer-printed lyrics and musical notation on regular-size bond paper, with the song title and name(s) of composer(s) and lyricist(s). Three copies of each entry must be submitted to the Center for Kapampangan Studies on or before Nov. 15, 2005.

Winners will be announced on December 16 during a show in which some or all of the song entries will be performed either by the composers themselves, or by a singer or singers of their choice; otherwise, the Center will assign its own performers. This performance shall not be part of the judging unless in case of a tie.
