Editorial: Con-ass champs

YOU can take, at least, two good guesses about those five local politicians who appeared in yesterday's front-page photo of this paper.

You can say, for instance, that all of them are loyal to their kabalen President, or they show a semblance of it given their personal show of support during the President's state-of-the-nation address last Monday.

Their familiar faces may have not stood out in the festive crowd that gave the President five standing ovations and thirty some applauses. But it is safe to assume that they did their best to add to the jubilant and expectant mood in the House that historic time.

It is also possible that the five, External Affairs Secretary Ed Pamintuan, Mayor Oscar S. Rodriguez and Board Members Dong Gonzales, Nelson Calara and JQ Quiambao, are secretly nurturing a fervent dream to be part of the first Parliament, if and when the proposed Charter Change through a Constituent Assembly will materialize.

In the case of Mayor Oca, he probably misses lawmaking and his fellow lawmakers from way back, especially his allies in the impeachment of former President Erap Estrada that paved the way for GMA's glorious ascension to Malacañang. There are rumors that he wants to leave the city government due to some problems, one of them financial. It is not probably true that he doesn't want to face his former political ally and now potential political rival in the 2007 city mayor race, Rep. Rey B. Aquino. On second thought, he is probably raring to fight him for the congressional (Parliament) seat in the third district.

Secretary Ed will be jobless once the Charter is changed, since that would most conceivably pre-terminate his boss. He is co-terminous with the President, and both of them are likely to go for a seat in the Parliament - she in Lubao, he in Angeles. Of course, Tarzan and Blueboy will be there to contend with.

As for the three bokals, BM Dong is silently building up his image as a viable candidate for the third district run, Charter Change and Con-Ass or not. BM Quiambao maybe a long shot, but you'll never know. BM Calara may, once in a while, entertain the idea of representing his district not only in the provincial capitol but in the Batasan. But that's probably just about it for now and in the foreseeable time.

In all, it is assuring that President GMA does not run out of kabalens who will go all the way to help her push for a Charter Change via the Con-Ass for the good of the country. And their political career, too, no doubt, which is not really bad at all.
