Ex-mayor's son behind senator house's shooting: police
By Marna H. Dagumboy

CAMP OLIVAS -- The son of prominent political figures in the town of Porac has been tagged as the one allegedly responsible for the indiscriminate shooting near the residence of Senator Manuel Lapid two months ago.

Chief Superintendent Alejandro Lapinid, chief of the Central Luzon police, a witness - whose name has been withheld - identified the suspect as Tristan Leroy de Ausen David, son of the late Porac mayor Roy David and former Provincial Board (PB) member Edna David.

The witness said that David, one of the occupants of the Nissan Zafari Station Wagon with unknown plate, was seen near the Lapids' residence after the shooting.

Months after the incident, police have yet to pin down the identity of the suspects behind the shooting, which prompted the witness to surface.

The witness presented himself to the police station last August 5, and reported who and what he saw during the incident. He told police that he was at first hesitant to come out in the open for fear to his life.

"But the voice of my conscience overruled my fear," he said.

The witness claimed that he saw David fired his caliber .9mm pistol three times in the air some 50 meters away from the Lapid residence last June 1.

He also said that David hurled invectives after firing his gun.

Based on the testimony of the witness, police have filed a criminal case against David before the Provincial Prosecutor's Office in the City of San Fernando.

'Impossible'

But David's mother, Edna, said that it is "impossible" for her son to get involved in the incident, adding that the suspect has been in the US for two months now.

She said the accusations against her son are "biased", and that her family has nothing to gain from the shooting incident. She added that it is "painful to think that some people want to destroy our good name."

Background

On June 1, unidentified men fired thrice at Lapid's home situated in front of the memorial cemetery in Barangay Poblacion in the town.

One of the senator's security men heard three gunshots adjacent to the gate of the Lapids' residence.

Police said a green Nissan Safari, with licensed plate 999, was seen passing along the spot where the gunshots were heard. It reportedly fled towards the west part of the area after the incident.

Sources close to the senator said that since the jueteng issue surfaced, he started receiving death threats.

However, Lapid said he is not afraid of the threats because he was just doing his job. (CN)
