Kapampangan Heroes' Square to rise in Bacolor
IN ORDER to bring back the lost glory of Bacolor and honor prominent Kapampangan figures who have contributed to the rich history and culture of the province, the Municipal Government is envisioning to create a heroes' square in the town.
Mayor Romeo "Buddy" Dungca, in a recent interview, said prominent Kapampangan luminaries like poet Crisostomo Sotto, martyr Jose Abad Santos and others should be honored.
Dungca proposed the putting-up of a heroes' square in front of the San Guillermo Church in the town where life-sized statues of past Kapampangan luminaries, martyrs and heroes can be viewed by the public.
He said the church, which was buried by lahar during the eruption of Mount Pinatubo, had been partially restored and is now a tourist attraction.
Dungca said foreign and local tourists visit the church, which is a strategical site to put up the monuments of Kapampangan heroes.
He admitted that finding the funding for the project is no easy task, but hopes that Kapampangan Senators Manuel Lapid, Francis Pangilinan and Jamby Madrigal, granddaughter of Abad Santos, will be able to provide assistance.
The mayor said that his vision is to provide his constituents livelihood and revive the rich cultural tradition of Baculud, described as the "Athens of Pampanga".
