Youth leader picked for national award By Albert B. Lacanlale
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- A Most Outstanding Kapampangan 2001 awardee in the field of youth leadership has been chosen among this year's Outstanding Youth Leader Awardees.
Anthony Ivan Henares, a columnist of Sun.Star Pampanga newspaper, was chosen by the board of directors of the United Nations Association of the Philippines (Unap) as one of the five recipients of the award.
In a letter sent to Henares, Philippine Normal University (PNU) professor Rene C. Romero, Unap awards committee chair, said the Unap board has confirmed the Kapampangan youth leader's inclusion to the five awardees last August 5.
Henares has been a consistent advocate of heritage preservation in the city. He has been in the forefront of battles against desecration of historic shrines and the upkeep of heritage areas in the province.
He also used to write a column, entitled "Footnotes to History," for Sun.Star Pampanga newspaper.
The awarding ceremony, which will be held at the Ceremonial Hall of Malacañang Friday, is one of the highlights of the Sixth International Youth Day celebration.
The search is open to all youth leaders, 15 to 30 years old who possesses qualifications like committed youth leadership in mobilizing the youth towards the attainment of Millennium Development Goals, active involvement in service-oriented projects and activities, and promotion of the thrusts and ideals of Unap (peace, human rights, sustainable development and international understanding).
"Congratulations. Thank you for inspiring the youth and mobilizing them to attain the Millennium Development Goals especially in the area of heritage preservation," Romero told Henares in a letter.
The Unap, in partnership with the PNU, is organizing the celebration of the International Youth Day with the theme: "Bagong Kabataan, Bilib Ako".
