'Robber' dies after being trapped in burning coop
By Marna H. Dagumboy

CAMP OLIVAS - In a case of bad luck, a man died of suffocation after he accidentally locked himself inside the burning San Fernando-Angeles City Jeepney Drivers and Operators Multi-Purpose Cooperative (SF-ACJDOMC) in Barangay Sto. Domingo here Monday night, where he was believed to have staged a heist.

Some P.5-million in property was burned in the 20-minute conflagration, reports said.

According to reports, the fatality - Marcelo Simbillo, 45 and a native of Nueva Ecija - set fire to the said facility to cover his tracks, but accidentally locked himself in.

Simbillo, police said, worked as a barker at the jeepney terminal of the San Fernando-Angeles City route.

Some P450,000 worth of engine oil, spare parts, fuel and oil filters, a brand new computer set, office records went up in smoke, said a jeepney driver - who is also an officer of the cooperative - who declined to be identified. Police said some P15,000 in cash, comprising the two-day sales of the cooperative, was also burned.

Simbillo's body was recovered by firemen around 1:30 am, reports said.

"The fatality was trapped inside the office. We surmise that he set fire to a stack of engine oil and suffocated from the thick smoke," police stressed. According to police, the cooperative office was full of highly combustible materials.

The cooperative, the source said, has more than 200 members and ventured into the selling of engine oils and other jeepney spare parts for members. He said they hired the suspect as barker after pleading for work for a living.
