Village's waste management plan cited By Albert B. Lacanlale
A BARANGAY in the northern part of San Fernando City has stood out as model village in the City Government's fight against the garbage problem.
In a solid waste management forum held recently, officials and residents of Barangay Quebiawan headed by Chairman Leonel Pamintuan earned accolades from the City officials for their compliance to the Republic Act (RA) 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act.
The barangay has constructed a materials recovery facility (MRF), a must in RA9003, in preparation for the complete closure of the city's dumpsite in Barangay Lara starting October 1.
Pamintuan said they are thankful that their barangay was chosen as a model community, even as he promised to further improve the village's solid waste management program.
Due to their efforts, P70,000 was awarded to the barangay as additional funds for their composting facilities and waste management equipment.
Mayor Oscar S. Rodriguez has vowed to give such an amount as incentives to the top 10 barangays who would set up MRFs in their respective communities.
Aside from the cash prize, three tricycles were provided for the barangay for the collection of biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes.
Like cash prizes, tricycles will also be awarded to the 35 barangays in the city.
Continued vigilance
The city's Solid Waste Management Task Force, which was formed to run after violators of environmental law, has stepped up its campaign against indiscriminate garbage disposal.
More than 60 violators and illegal waste dumpers in the city are already apprehended.
