Public works engineer ready for Ombud probe
By Dante M. Fabian

ANGELES CITY -- The district chief of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said Wednesday that he is ready to submit to an investigation by the Office of the Ombudsman in connection with the alleged sale of part of the P19 million worth of materials purchased from the Priority Development Assistance Fund (Pdaf) of Pampanga First District Representative Francis Nepomuceno.

Ernesto Reyes, DPWH district chief, said he would not evade investigation by any agency to prove that he had not committed any wrongdoing in the performance of his duties.

Upon the request of Mayor Carmelo Lazatin, the Office of the Ombudsman recently disclosed that the field operations division has been tasked to handle the investigation on the Pdaf-funded materials allegedly sold by unidentified individuals.

Lazatin requested President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Ombudsman Simeon V. Marcelo and Norma Vitug-Mendoza of the Commission on Audit (COA) to conduct separate investigation on the allegations.

The mayor asked for the conduct of "formal investigation on the installation of the P12 and P7 million worth of water pipes in Angeles City, purchased by the DPWH based in the city through the Community Development Fund (CDF) of Nepomuceno from 1998 to present."

It was learned that the allegations were stirred up by Reyes's former assistant chief apparently to get even for having been removed from the district office.

Reyes said he is now waiting for the investigation to proceed but has not received any notice from the field investigators of the Office of the Ombudsman.

He said he is confident that an investigation will clear his name of suspicions of any involvement in the alleged diversion of materials purchased with the Pdaf of Nepomuceno.

"My conscience is clear because I've done nothing wrong," he said.
