P10M irrigation project seen to resolve Arayat water problem
ARAYAT -- The Department of Agriculture (DA) and the National Irrigation Authority (NIA) are planning to set up a P10 million irrigation project that would provide water to some 600 hectares of farmlands in the town.
Manuel L. Collado, regional irrigation manager of the NIA in Central Luzon, said Wednesday the proposed irrigation project involves the construction of canal systems, control structures, slope protection and purchase of a new turbine pump.
Collado said he project will be placed along the boundary of Matamo and Cupang in the town.
He however admitted that the NIA could not afford to fund the project since their office has only some P18 million allocation for 2005 and P11.4 million for 2006.
Mayor Luis A. Espino said more than 1,000 farmers tilling 600 hectares of farmlands in the barrios of Camba, San Mateo, Mapalad, Suklayin, Batasan, Candating and Tabun will directly benefit from the project.
Espino said 60 to 70 percent of farmlands in the town will be benefited with the creation of project, adding that without the assistance of the National and Provincial governments, the project could not have been possible.
He added that with the new turbine pump, farmers can be assured of a greater crop yield in any given season. He said if the farmers in Arayate used to harvest only once a year, they can now harvest corn and palay two to three times a year.
"Funding for this project will come from Agriculture Secretary Domingo Panganiban's fund. He is just waiting for plans and programs of work and the implementation will follow," said the mayor.
Vice Mayor Larry Trinidad said farmers have been waiting for a long time for the project, adding that the project, once implemented, will solve the irrigation problem of tillers in Arayat especially during the dry season. (CN)
