Tight security up for 23rd SEA Games
By Marna H. Dagumboy

CAMP OLIVAS -- The Central Luzon police announced Wednesday that security preparations are in full swing for the 23rd South East Asian Games (SEAG), wherein six out of 53 different events will be held in separate venues, including Subic Bay Free Port and Angeles City.

Superintendent Abelardo Villacorta, chief of the Regional Operations and Plans Divisions (ROPD), said the Task Group SEAG will heighten security measures in the two venues in order to ensure the safety of the athletes and visitors in the area.

Villacorta said some 800 athletes, including official delegates and visitors, are expected to arrive before the meet starts on Nov. 22, 2005.

A review on the security plans, including the deployment of more than 1,000 policemen, military and volunteers, will be finalized next week, he said.

"Simulation exercises will be held next week in areas where six SEA games events will be held," said Villacorta, adding that more than a dozen canine dogs have been tapped to join the security exercises.

Among the areas that will be secured are hotels inside the two freeport zones and airports (Subic and Clark), including the venues for various events and parking areas.

"We are not taking chances. The athletes will be closely monitored," said Villacorta.

A report also said aside from the security, emergency personnel and rescue and volunteers backed by ambulances, will also be deployed in the area.

The police official said the Task Group SEAG led by Central Luzon Police Director Alejandro Lapinid is working harder to ensure the safety of the participants during the holding of the international meet.

Among the events to be held in Subic are sailing, archery, triathlon, canoe, while lawn bowl and petanque will be convened at the Hidden Valle in Angeles City.

"We're serious about this, and the Task Group is doing everything to ensure the safety of delegates and other visitors," said Villacorta.

Some 7,000 delegates from 11 South East Asian countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Brunei, China, Maynmar, Vietnam, India, Taiwan and the Philippines will see action in at least 53 different events during the games.
