Banks warned against fake manager's checks By Albert B. Lacanlale
A MAN who attempted to deceive a bank by depositing a fraudulent bank manager's check worth P174,820 was arrested in an entrapment operation in San Fernando City, police said Monday.
The group of policemen led by Senior Inspector Ferdinand D. Germino prevented the suspect, identified as Antonio G. Gabaisen, from completing the bank transaction at the Planters Bank branch in Barangay Sto. Rosario in the city.
A report said Planters Bank's assistant vice president Jeffrey Jose L. Bognot alerted the City police upon learning that Gabaisen, a resident of 2242 Manuel Roxas St., Sta. Ana, Manila, had tried but failed to deposit the check to another Planters Bank branch in Barangay Dolores, also of the city.
The check furnished was supposedly paid to the order of Garbes and Garbes Trading Corporation, a wholesale company in Malolos, Bulacan.
Germino said the suspect's modus operandi had been to deposit the check and, through a bank transaction receipt, he would pick up merchandise equivalent to the amount of the check from the Garbes and Garbes warehouse.
The suspect reportedly claimed that the check was handed to him by a certain Rochel Benitez of Quezon City.
When the police tried to contact Benitez through a text message using the cellular phone that was recovered from the suspect, they received the following reply: "HUWAG KA NANG MAG-AKSAYA NG ORAS, ALAM KONG HULI KA NA [Don't waste your time, I know you are already arrested] ."
Superintendent Nicanor Targa, chief of the San Fernando City police, said Gabaisen could be a member of a bigger syndicate that uses the same modus in their crimes.
Targa warned banks in the province against individuals using counterfeit manager's checks. He said should a similar incident occur, bank managers are encouraged to immediately inform the authorities.
