Editorial: Here they go again

CLEARLY, the snatchings along the Gapan-San Fernando-Olongapo road by motorcycle-riding men have not yet stopped, what with a recent incident involving a Sun•Star Pampanga reporter.

The incident, mind you, happened in daylight. It was not dark enough yet outside, as Marna Dagumboy, a member of this paper's reportorial team, saw how the suspects looked like.

Unfortunately, she was not able to stop them from fleeing with her handbag, which contained her personal belongings. She fought with them, albeit for a short while, until she finally realized there was no use.

All she could do was cover her mouth in shock and stare at the perpetrators, who did not even bother to use bonnets to hide their faces.

So bold, don't you think?

In fairness, this is the first snatching incident we heard of since City Mayor Oscar S. Rodriguez directed the City police to act into the rampant snatching incidents along the GSO Road, victims of which are mostly employees of firms along the highway.

Mayor Oca's directive came after several businessmen reported to police that their employees have been victims to motorcycle-riding men.

The City police, for its part, implemented the "No Plate, No Travel" policy, which primary targets are single motorcycles. The authorities have also been able to recover a number of motorcycles, without plates, from alleged snatchers who are believed to have operated along the GSO.

We believe that these motorcycle-riding men have decided to step up their operations, what with the Holidays fast approaching. The Christmas season spells expenses for them and their families, so expect more of these snatching incidents to take place in the coming weeks.

They have also decided to become bolder, operating during daylight.

In retaliation, the police should also step up their operations against these motorcycle-riding men who are out to get the bags of unsuspecting working females.

More police visibility would also deter these incidents, we believe - and fast, too... before any more fall prey to their modus operandi.
