Candaba hosts martial arts tourney

CANDABA -- Good news to all martial arts enthusiasts in Central Luzon!

The First Candaba Unified/Mixed Martial Arts Open Invitational Tournament dubbed as "Mano-Mano sa Candaba, Matira ang Matibay" will be held on Nov. 29, 2005 at the Genuino Park in the town's Poblacion.

The tournament will be held under the auspices of Mayor Jerry Pelayo in cooperation with the World Muay Thai Federation of the Philippines (WMFP), Martial Arts Federation for World Peace Philippines (MAFWPP), World Tong-Il Moo Do Federation of the Philippines (WTMDFP) and the Kalipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan Citizens' Development Initiatives, Inc. (Kaakbay-CDI).

The holding of the Mano-mano or hand-to-hand combat is aimed at encouraging the public, particularly the youth, to get involved and actively participate in sports activities to enhance their physical and mental health.

The competitions are also intended to develop confidence of the participants as they will be taught with self-discipline and self-defense.

Mano-Mano is inviting all martial arts clubs in Pampanga, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Bataan and Zambales to join the first martial arts ultimate fighting challenge in the town.

The initial entries include Black Panther Martial Arts Club - Pozzorubio, Pangasinan; Brotherhood Muay Thai - Baguio City; Way of the Champion- Baguio City, Philippine Kamao - Manila; Tong Il Moodo - Metro Manila; Wild Cat Martial Arts - Region 2 and Ilocos Sur.

Mano-Mano will showcase seven weight divisions for men such as below 48, 51, 54, 57, 60, 65 and 70 kilograms while the women fighter will be in the 54 kilograms below.

Exhibitions of world mixed martial arts champions and arnis demonstration will also be featured in the event.

The unified/mixed martial arts will include grappling techniques, judo throw, boxing, kickboxing, karate, tae kwon do, jujitsu, among others. The basic rules are hand to hand, no weapons, standard boxing glove, with head gear, mouth piece, hand bandages, two rounds, two minutes per round for the elimination and for the finals.

Prizes at stake are P5,000 in cash for the champion; P3,000 for the second and P2,000 for the third placer in each division and P6,000 for the two exhibition bouts.

No fees will be collected from the participants belonging to martial arts clubs and schools. Interested parties may submit their letters of participation to the Municipal Hall of Candaba until Nov. 18, 2005.
