Cops' guns sealed By Reynaldo G. Navales
MABALACAT -- To ensure that nobody among their men fires a gun during the New Year revelry, police officials have sealed the service firearms of all policemen in the town.
Superintendent Renato M. Soria, chief of the Mabalacat police, said they have wrapped the muzzles of firearms of his men with masking tape on Thursday. "I signed the masking tape to make sure that they (policemen) would not fire their guns, not unless there is an encounter," he said.
The town police chief had also initiated a campaign against the use of guns during the celebration by coordinating with barangay leaders.
Soria said they have already obtained from the Firearms and Explosive Division (FED) of the Philippine National Police (PNP) a list of private individuals in the town who own guns.
There had been an incident in the town when a baby on a cradle was killed after being hit by a stray bullet fired during the New Year celebration.
Soria said he also alerted his men of the possible operation of robbery groups during the holiday. He said the Special Operation Group (SOG) has conducted an operation against drug pushers last Wednesday night but yielded no apprehension.
